Frequently Asked Questions

What type of Time Lapse camera should I buy
The key point here is to determine why you need a time lapse camera. If its for social media and internet based marketing then a simple 720p product is perfect. If you want to use the time lapse footage for broadcast or large screen presentations, then it has to be a 1980p product. All of the Brinno cameras are 720p and the Camdo solution is 1980p. Another issue is battery life. The TLC200 pro has a battery life of 45 days, the Camdo unit is around 21 days without a solar panel and the standard TLC200 has a battery life of over 120 days
What Time Lapse settings are best for my project
For any long period project recording the settings should be around 1 image every 10 minutes but if the project is shorter then try and maximise the images you capture. Its better to edit these out than to have not recorded them in the first place. For reference, the TLC200 standard camera has an image size or around 70kb, the TLC200 Pro is around 200kb and the Camdo solution has an image size of approx. 3.9Mb per image.
Whats the biggest SD card I can use
This depends on which camera your are considering. The TLC200 range will take up to a 32Gb SD card officially and the Camdo solution is based on the GoPro camera and can take up to 256Gb SD cards. The key thing here is the formatting on the SD card. The Brinno camera accepts FAT32 formatting while the Camdo can take both FAT32 and EXFAT formatting. There are software converters on the market which can convert one format to another. For example, a 64Gb SD card will be formatted in EXFAT but when it is reformatted in FAT32 it will work with these cameras but will give greater capacity.
Can I use an external power supply?
Yes, you can use Micro USB cable + DC5V adapter for all the Brinno range and the Camdo solution allows for either external supplies or bigger batteries.
Can I use external power with the wetherproof housings?
Yes, you could plug in the cable through either the Brinno or Camdo housing. The Camdo unit has a cable gland and the Brinno unit has a rubber bung arrangement.
Whats the difference between the cameras in the Brinno range
There are three types of camera in the Brinno range. The Standard TLC200 This has a battery life of over 120 days and a image size of 70kb. This is a very simple camera to use and offers long term deployment if you are working in an environment where camera servicing might be tricky. The camera is normally supplied in our project kit BCC100. TLC200 Pro The current flagship product from Brinno. This has a battery life of 45 days and an image size of 200kb. It offers better pictures at lowlight and indoors because of its HDR sensor. It also allows lens changes and webcam settings. We usually sell this version in our Pro Packs or in the BCC200 kit. The final Brinno product is the MAC 200 This is based on the original TLC200 and has a lens angle of 60 degrees as opposed to the normal 120 degrees. The camera has its own weatherproof case and is supplied with a fixing bracket. The key difference is that this camera has an integral motion detector which means that the camera can be used in the following configurations:- Time Lapse Motion Activation Hybrid (both timelapse and motion activated)
How does the Camdo Blink work
This is a really great add-on. It works with the GoPro Hero3, 3+, 4 and 4+ currently with new releases coming out soon for the Hero 5. The Blink controller simply clips on to the back of the GoPro Hero and takes full control of the power and image settings via its wireless app. This means that you are no longer at the mercy of the limited GoPro battery which can be as little as 2 hours. The Blink controller allows for external power supplies to be used. This also includes solar panels and mains supplies. Solar panels even work well in the UK's limited sunshine.
Can I use my own GoPro camera with the Camdo enclosure
For sure. The Camdo range has been made to work with all the GoPro Hero 3, 3+ and 4+ range and your own camera will fit snuggly in the enclosures with no problem at all.
Can I set a working period e.g. from 8AM to 5PM?
Yes, please use the TIMER function on al the cameras. The Brinno timer is on the set-up menu, the Camdo timer is via the wireless App and the Spotcam timer is on the user dashboard after you log in.
Can you recommend a good video editor
There are so many to choose from here. It largely depends on both the platform you are using and what level of final product you are looking for. If you are using a MAC, then you should already have either IMovie or Final Cut Pro installed. If you are using a PC, then try out the free ones first. We use the NCH video suite which is very easy to use.
